Digital Distortion Studies
This experimental series explores the tension between photography and digital reconstruction. Beginning with original portraits and environmental images, I manipulated colour channels, grain, compression, and pixel structure until the source material began to break apart. Fragments of the original photograph were then layered back into the composition, creating images that feel simultaneously familiar and unstable.
Rather than treating digital distortion as an error, I used it as a visual material—stretching, bending, and reorganizing pixels to reveal new textures, forms, and relationships within each image. The resulting work exists somewhere between photography, collage, and graphic design, questioning where an image ends and its digital interpretation begins.
At the time, I was heavily influenced by Korean fashion photography, editorial design, and experimental typography. This influence appears through the saturated colour palette, unconventional portrait compositions, and the recurring Korean word 화성, meaning Mars. The tag became a personal signature throughout the series, reinforcing the work’s otherworldly and digitally constructed atmosphere.
